Salsa, Bachata, Kizomba or Tango? Choosing a Dance in Sapporo

Contents
This page is a reference translation of the Japanese original (日本語の原文). It has not been checked by a native speaker. Please confirm details with each organizer.
On this site, “Latin dance” means partner dances you do with other people at parties: salsa, bachata, kizomba, Argentine tango and similar styles. It is not the “Latin” section of competitive ballroom dancing (rumba, cha-cha-cha and so on). The four dances differ in the mood of the music, the basic movement and how close you stand.
There is no right answer about which dance to start with. Compare the mood and the movement, and try the one you are curious about.
Comparing the four
| Dance | Music | Movement | Closeness | Overall mood |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Salsa | Bright, lively | Steps forward and back, turns | Often moves apart | Energetic |
| Bachata | Sweet, relaxed | Moves side to side | Fairly close | Calm |
| Kizomba | Slow, smooth | Moves like walking | Close | Settled |
| Argentine tango | Wistful, quiet | Walking | Embrace position | Quiet |
Note: these are general tendencies. They differ by venue and teacher.
