Bachata is a music and dance that began in the Dominican Republic. Many songs are slow and sweet, built around the guitar.
Basic step
In general, the basic step is three steps to the side, then a light tap of the toe on the fourth beat. The steps are smaller than in salsa, and the hip and weight movements stand out.
How it differs from salsa
| Item | Salsa | Bachata |
|---|---|---|
| Mood of the music | Percussion-led and bright | Guitar-led and sweet |
| Basic step | Steps forward and back | Three steps to the side + tap |
| Closeness | Often moves apart and turns | Often danced close together |
A range of styles
There are many ways to dance it, from traditional styles to smooth styles that use more body movement. No style is better or worse. Each venue and school prefers different ones.
Note
In a close dance, it is important to check that your partner is comfortable. Please also read How to Ask for a Dance and How to Say No.
